Ten years ago, the salesperson knew everything and the customer knew almost nothing. Today it’s often the other way around. Your customer has read the reviews, priced three trims, looked up the invoice and gotten a trade value online, all before saying hello.
But here’s what the “everyone buys online now” crowd gets wrong: most of those customers still want to close in person. In one 2025 survey of recent buyers, only 5% bought completely online, and 80% used a mix of online research and a dealership visit (Auto Remarketing). The showroom isn’t dying. The old playbook is.
What Stops Working
- Information games. Hiding the price until the end insults a buyer who already knows it.
- Fake urgency. “This price is only good today” sounds like a trick to someone with three quotes in their pocket.
- Running to the tower. Every trip to the manager tells the buyer that pushing works.
What Works Instead
Respect the homework. Open with what they already know: “What did you find when you were looking online?” You skip twenty minutes of walking the lot and land on the vehicle they actually want.
Separate price from product. When the price objection comes, agree first, then ask: “Price aside, is this the one you want to be driving?” If the answer is yes, you’re negotiating a number, not starting over.
Be the expert they can’t find online. Reviews can’t tell a customer how the third row really fits a car seat, or which trim their commute actually needs. That knowledge is your rep’s edge.
Informed buyers aren’t harder to sell. They’re harder to trick. That’s good news for reps who sell on trust.
One Drill for This Week
At tomorrow’s morning meeting, have reps pair up. One plays a buyer who opens with “I already know your invoice price.” The other practices the response: acknowledge it, then ask what made them choose this model. Two minutes, three rounds each. That’s a skill that pays off by lunch.
