F&I Coaching

Transparent F&I that customers trust and keep. Coaching for the business office from someone who has sat in the box and worked the floor.

Most of the Profit Is Now Made in the Box

Front-end gross keeps shrinking, so the business office carries the deal. That makes F&I skill, and F&I trust, worth more than ever.

Transparent F&I Sells More

The FTC’s CARS Rule was vacated by a federal appeals court in January 2025, but only on procedural grounds. Dealers are still accountable for deceptive practices, and regulators still watch for payment packing, unclear fees and products customers didn’t knowingly choose (ComplyAuto).

That’s good news for honest F&I. Customers who understand what they’re buying keep it, and kept products don’t come back as chargebacks.

Unbroken Closers coaches F&I conversations, not legal compliance. Work with your dealership’s compliance provider and attorney on rules, forms and disclosures.

What We Coach in the Business Office

  • A clean turnover from the salesperson to F&I
  • Presenting the same menu to every customer, every time
  • Explaining each product in plain language, with its price and its optional nature
  • Handling the eight common F&I objections honestly
  • Prep habits that cut the wait to get into the box
  • Contract checklists that speed up funding
  • Keeping products sold, so cancellations and chargebacks drop

The Eight Most Common F&I Hiccups

Most F&I problems start before the customer sits down. Here’s what goes wrong, and the fix we coach.

The Long Wait to Get Into F&I

Customers sit for an hour after agreeing on a car, and the energy dies before the menu is ever shown.

The fix: Start the credit application and paperwork prep during the demo drive, so F&I is ready when the customer is.

Payment Shock

The salesperson quoted a payment to close the deal, and F&I has to walk it back.

The fix: Sales quotes payment ranges from real desk numbers, never a promise F&I can’t keep.

Stips and Missing Documents

Proof of income, residence or insurance shows up missing at signing, or after the customer has gone home.

The fix: Send a simple “what to bring” checklist with every appointment confirmation.

Trade Payoff and Negative Equity Surprises

The payoff comes back higher than the customer said, and the numbers change at the desk.

The fix: Get the payoff early and explain negative equity plainly, before the customer is in the box.

Funding Delays From Contract Errors

A missed signature or a wrong date sends the contract back from the lender and holds up funding.

The fix: Use a contract checklist on every deal, and a second set of eyes on the first deals of each new F&I manager.

Cancellations and Chargebacks

Products sold under pressure get canceled days later, taking the income back with them.

The fix: Sell with a transparent menu so customers keep what they chose.

Inconsistent Menus

Some customers see every product and some see none, depending on who’s in the chair and how busy it is.

The fix: Present the same menu to every customer, every time. It’s better for fairness and for penetration.

Approvals That Fall Through After Delivery

The customer drives home before financing is final, then gets called back to redo the deal.

The fix: Finalize approval before delivery whenever possible, and follow your compliance provider’s process when you can’t.

The Eight Most Common F&I Objections

Honest answers that respect the customer’s choice. Tap an objection to see the response.

“I don’t want any extras.”

Try sayingEvery product is optional, and that’s your call. Can I take two minutes to show you what’s available, so you decide with all the facts? If it’s a no, we’ll go straight to signing.

Why it works: Respect the no, ask for two minutes, and keep the promise.

“I’m financing through my credit union.”

Try sayingCredit unions often have good rates. If you’d like, we can see whether one of our lenders can match or beat it. If not, you keep your credit union. Either way works for me.

Why it works: Compete on value. Never pressure someone off outside financing.

“This payment is higher than the salesperson said.”

Try sayingLet’s go through exactly what makes up the payment, line by line: price, taxes, fees, your trade and the term. Then you’ll see where every dollar goes.

Why it works: Payment shock is solved with transparency, never by hiding products in the payment.

“Warranties are a waste. Cars are reliable now.”

Try sayingA lot of them are. The real question is what one major repair would do to your budget. If it wouldn’t hurt, you may not need coverage. If it would, this is worth a look.

Why it works: Let the customer weigh their own risk. No scare stories.

“I can get GAP cheaper through my insurance company.”

Try sayingYou might, and it’s smart to check. Coverage varies, so compare what each one actually pays. Here’s exactly what ours covers, so you can compare side by side.

Why it works: Win the comparison honestly, or lose it gracefully.

“I’ve been here four hours. Just let me sign.”

Try sayingI respect your time. Give me ten minutes: I’ll show you the menu, you decide, and we sign.

Why it works: Then fix the wait itself. See the hiccups above.

“I need to think about it.”

Try sayingThat’s fair. Which part do you want to think over? Some coverage can be added later, though pricing can change. I can send you the menu to look at tonight.

Why it works: Give them room and the facts. No fake deadlines.

“What’s my rate? Are you marking it up?”

Try sayingHere’s your rate and the lender it’s with. You’re always welcome to compare it with your own bank before you sign.

Why it works: Straight answers build the trust that sells products.
