Grow Where You’re Planted

Every sales floor has a rep who’s sure the problem is the store. The leads are bad. The inventory is thin. The managers don’t get it. If they worked across town, they’d be crushing it.

Sometimes they leave. And six months later, they’re telling a new set of coworkers the exact same story.

The Lesson From Landing on Earth

LJ’s memoir begins where his life began, not where he would have chosen to start. The lesson he carried out of that chapter became the first lesson of selling: grow where you’re planted. You don’t get to pick your starting point. You do get to decide what you build from it.

What It Looks Like on the Floor

  • Master your own inventory. Know the units on your lot better than anyone, including the ones nobody wants.
  • Work the leads you have. The rep who complains about lead quality usually hasn’t called the old ones.
  • Build your own book. Every customer you take care of today is a referral source next year, at this store.
Better soil helps. But the rep who can’t grow here usually can’t grow there either.

One Step This Week

Write down three things you control at your store, like your follow-up, your product knowledge and your greeting. Pick one and master it before Friday.
